Scholarships for Online Degrees

Online scholarships are different from the regular scholarships available in schools and colleges. The scholarships provided in regular universities and schools are athletic scholarships, departmental scholarships and academic scholarships. Online scholarship applications are slightly different from these procedures for obvious reasons. Most online school sites have options for online scholarship exams.

These exams test to find the most astute students who can take advantage of the scholarships and maximize their benefits.  Performance based on the scores gained in theses exams can give the student a chance to get a scholarship and also see where he or she stands against their academic competition.

Getting Online Scholarships

online degree scholarshipsOnline scholarships are available for most sites that have been accredited in the United States. The procedure for scholarship online applications is most often simple and straightforward. The student must access the website of the educational institution and fill in the scholarship form. There are also times when the form has to be downloaded and then mailed via the post office to the online university’s business address.

The application form could also include various details about the academic career of the student applying. There can also be an online test when applying for certain scholarships, which is a great option for you if you cannot commute easily or want a more immediate answer.  A student may qualify for a scholarship based on the following merits:

  1. A High GPA
  2. Work Experience
  3. Past Educational Experience
  4. Heredity or Nationality
  5. Extracurricular Activity or Involvement
  6. Financial Need

Different Kinds of Scholarships

There are various kinds of scholarship options available to students, each tailored to separate factors.  These factors can be your educational goal, such as final level of degree.  They can also relate to your field of study, and the schools desire to promote certain degree programs.

There are some online schools and colleges that provide full scholarships, however these are not common and difficult to attain. In such instances the students do not have to pay any amount for the course or degree, it is all included in the scholarship. There are also options where a partial scholarship is given to the students. A partial scholarship means that the student pays a portion of the tuition and the institution providing the scholarship pays for the rest.  This may include a certain number of free semesters or reduction in the overall fee for the student.  The student should consider any type of scholarship to help lower their overall costs.  Explore your scholarship options before applying to the online school of your choice.

Online Scholarship Scams

diploma successOnline scholarship scams have become a common occurrence these days. The scam occurs in its most common pattern as fee based scholarship application.  The process for online application for scholarships will state a certain fee is required. This is also known as the application fee or the administrative fee. The amount is paid, the application submitted, but in reality there is no scholarship that ever existed in the first place.  Additionally there are often extra charges for getting a copy of the form.

Other non-application scams use different methods to obtain money.  The student is told they have to pay extra charges, but this request is made only after submitting their application forms. Also students who are qualified for the scholarship have to pay ‘disbursement charges or redemption fees’. These kinds of extra charges have become a money making scheme for many online schools and colleges. Educational institutions with accreditations are an exception to this scam.  Students should check the accreditation of the online school or college before applying for a scholarship to avoid becoming a victim of this money game.
